English and Social Studies often share related standards and content. They require a similar set of skills, so why not mesh these curricula together? Discover how we have combined 8th grade Social Studies and English into one powerfully designed, differentiated course. Our primary focus is to build reading comprehension and writing skills, such as analysis of enduring issues and recognition of author’s purpose. Hear how we incorporate the use of simulations, designed to put students in challenging, real-life situations and present them with dilemmas for which they must use critical, higher-level thinking skills to figure out. Students take on such roles as homesteaders in the Wild West, big business tycoons, immigrant laborers in a coal mine, Greek gods interviewed for the news, investors in a skyrocketing stock market, lawyers in a literary mock trial, Progressive reformers starring in reality TV shows, and Beat coffeehouse poets. See how digital tools enhance these blended learning experiences, including Google apps and extensions, NoodleTools for research, TurnItIn for remedying plagiarism, DoInk for easy green screen video editing, and Verso for online discussion.
