Digital Generation - Interdependent Learning Activities Through Remote Collaboration

Digital Generation is a collaborative course offered in conjunction with Stony Brook University. Students explore topics including how to build a strong web presence, leveraging social media, producing professional marketing and presentation materials, creating engaging video content, developing digital portfolios, and utilizing distance learning and mobile devices as learning tools. Extensive participation in a cross-district, multi-school team project allows students to experience remote working environments that have become the norm in the modern workforce. Students will be showcasing their collaborative projects that were presented to administrators at Stony Brook University, as well as detailing the dynamic process of working remotely with peers from other districts to accomplish shared goals.

Jayhawks for the Future
The world is becoming more paperless. It’s not a matter of opinion, rather a fact. So many districts throughout the United States have accepted a paperless approach to education, however the change some schools have accepted can be embraced by many more. By starting in our own district, we decided that we could make a change as a group of students. With the support of a teacher of ours and administration, our group helped push students toward a paperless mindset. Students that despised the absence of paper before have now ditched binders and notebooks, and started to use technology. This use of technology has not only decreased the carbon footprint of our district, but it has presented students with amazing alternatives to classroom norms. Learn how our team pushed a small paperless initiative to ultimately minimize the environmental effect of our district.

Virtual Enterprises - Emerging Workspaces with Sway

Virtual Enterprises is an in-school entrepreneurship program in which students establish and manage a company that replicates the functions and demands of a real business. Westhampton Beach High School's Virtual Enterprises team, Sway, creates a variety of hammocks for home and office use, made from 100% recycled fibers. Sway has a strong emphasis on incorporating hammocks into corporate workspaces and educational institutions. During the Interactive Playground session, the Sway VE team will have sample hammocks on display that may be used in a workplace or school setting. Additionally, Virtual Enterprises students will share data that supports the mental and physical health benefits of hammocks.
